Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (SZMF)

Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (SZMF) is the central research and development company of Salzgitter Group. As one of the leading European steel research departments it works on extensive development projects of material, processes, and components. The com-pany site in Duisburg focuses on the business unit Steel Processing and thus on the produc-tion and application of steel tubular products, which are widely used in the energy sector, e. g. in gas pipelines, and in industry.

Decisive topics are next to tube production corrosion and corrosion protection as well as ma-terial and component testing and design. A relevant part is the hydrogen induced corrosion, for sour service gas pipelines as well as for compressed hydrogen gas transport and storage in pipes of various materials including weld connections.

The activities in the field of hydrogen application concern the safe hydrogen infrastructure and the hydrogen-based steel production. The application of steel pipes in the hydrogen economy are for example transport lines, storage components or support lines and tanks for mobile applications. Theoretic analyses add to extensive experimental methods for destruc-tive and non-destructive investigations on materials and components subject to hydrogen pressure. As accredited testing laboratory for numerous experiments the SZMF performs material qualification and acceptance tests.

Together with the partners from the Salzgitter Group, external industry partners and research partners SZMF has gained sound knowledge on hydrogen effects on steel pipes, which forms the basis for practical development. SZMF has contributed as research partner to many pub-licly funded projects concerning the hydrogen infrastructure. Being a member in numerous national and international working groups for standardization and research associations for pipelines and for the field of industry a continuous exchange with experts is ensured.
